Mission and objectives

The UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (UN RCO) in Nepal works under the strategic guidance of the UN Resident Coordinator (RC) and supports the UN Country Team (UNCT) in the advancement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The UN RCO fulfills the following five key functions in support of the responsibilities of the RC and the UNCT including:

Strategic planning;
Development economics;
Partnerships and development finance;
Data and results management and reporting; and Research, communications and advocacy.

The UN RCO and UNCT work closely with the Government of Nepal and other Development Partners to support Nepal in achieving Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals. The UN RCO team supports the RC and UNCT in ensuring a more coordinated and coherent approach across the work of the UN and is composed of experts in development and humanitarian coordination, information management, human rights, gender equality, communications and communications.

Context

A reinvigorated UN Resident Coordinator (RC) system is at the centre of a repositioned United Nations development system reform. The RC system has been instrumental in driving coherence on the ground and leading the United Nations Country Teams with expertise in five core functions including a robust communications capacity.

The communications and advocacy function of the RCO is to promoting public understanding and support for the aims and activities of the United Nations by communicating about its work and disseminating accessible UN information materials to a local audience in Nepali, English, and local languages, engaging with local and regional partners; and bring the United Nations closer to the people it serves.

Led by the National Information Officer, the communications and advocacy team of the UNRCO works to support effective joint communication and advocacy efforts of the UN Communication Group (UNCG) and RCO in Nepal through the UN Communication Strategy. It also conducts joint communications campaigns and events and organizes public-facing campaigns offline and online on social media channels.

The International UN University Volunteer will work to support the efforts of the UN Resident Coordinator Office and UNCG and provide substantial and creative support to make the UN social media relatable and engaging to the audience it serves via development of effective communications products and materials.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of the National Information Officer, the UN University Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Participate in creative brainstorming’s for social media messages and campaigns and supports in creating bi-weekly social media content calendars for the UNRC and UNCT accounts
  • Support in providing channel-specific ideas for the use of social media messages, videos, or photos and create creative and fun video concepts for the Facebook and Instagram audience.
  •  Provide support to work for the Social Media platform to tag content and analyze its performance to prepare bi-weekly analytics and content reports capturing national trends, feedback from followers, social listening, opportunities, and challenges and UNCT’s social media accounts performance.
  • Help maintain a repository of all social media -related multimedia (audio-visual and graphics).
  • Help monitor content performance on the UN Nepal social media channels and coordinate with the NIO to manage responses to questions and queries posted by followers diligently.
  • Engage with the Facebook, TikTok and Instagram community daily within the UN Social media guidance
  • Contribute to the strategy, vision, and voice of the UNCT Social media channels.
  • Conduct a qualitative report to identify themes and issues raised by people on the social media platform through social listening.
  • Provide support to draft articles/write-ups about events, campaigns etc for publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.
  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible

Other information

Living conditions and remarks 

Living conditions in Kathmandu are good. In Kathmandu, comfortable inexpensive flats (furnished and unfurnished) are available. Both imported and local food and clothing are abundantly available. There is a short supply of water, and it is not safe to drink without treatment. Public transport is easily available and generally reliable. Kathmandu has a temperate climate with coldest temperature reaching just above zero at the night during the winter and mild but humid during the monsoon period, mid-June to end September.
