Social Care Worker Vacancy at Okhaldhunga Community Hospital

In the early 1960’s, a Gurkha soldier extended an invitation to a physician in the British Army to start a medical project in the Okhaldhunga District. From its beginnings as a small remote clinic, it has grown into a medium-sized community hospital of 50 inpatient beds, with plans to expand towards a 100-bed hospital in the future. It also hosts a Community-Based Rehabilitation program and a School of Nursing.

Objective of the job

To provide pastoral care and counselling to patients and staff who are suffering with emotional, or family crisis, serious physical, psychiatric illness, or substance abuse.
To assess the financial needs of patients and approve charity as needed.
To coordinate with all hospital departments and relevant organisations to ensure optimal care for the most vulnerable patients.

Areas of Responsibility

Pastoral care and counselling for patients
To counsel emotionally distressed, psychiatric, HIV/Aids patients, terminally ill, and others as referred by Medical staff and to keep appropriate records and report as required.
To supervise and manage a Book- and Toy Trolley Ministry to the paediatric ward and ground floor.
To manage and participate in weekly Chapel meetings for patients.
To visit patients in the wards and departments and when appropriate pray with and counsel patients.
To arrange home visits for patients where this will help with follow up or assessment.
Be available when called to crises, such as deaths and difficult situations. Be available to the person in crisis, offering counselling if appropriate.
To visit OPD platform and identify patients in particular need and give assistance.
Pastoral care and counselling for staff
To provide pastoral care for staff suffering with emotional, or family crisis, serious physical, psychiatric illness / substance abuse, including home visits where necessary.
To provide support for the Hospital Christian Fellowship.
Charity assessments
To carry out financial assessments of inpatients and outpatients.
To make ward rounds when requested by supervisor or medical staff to assess specific patients’ need in the areas of food, clothing, education, and financial assistance.
To assess and approve all charity payments up to NRs 10,000 and seek HD approval for amounts over NRs 10,000.
To keep proper records of all charity assessments and make report at the end of each month.
Coordination with other organisations
To ensure good coordination with Saathi Sewa for child heart and rehab fund patients.
To coordinate with ECTC for DCPT practical placements at OCH.
To manage and supervise all staff and activities of the Social Service department when required.
To be able to perform other tasks assigned by the line manager.

Decision Making

Work as an autonomous social worker within the limits of experience and skills. Consult freely with other Social Service department staff, doctors, and nurses for advice regarding management of patients. Support and advise other staff in the Social Service department.

Dimensions

Pastoral care, individual counselling, and financial assessments are the three main dimensions of the post. The job holder will be a part of OCH clinical staff.

Qualification & Experience

Required: Minimum qualification is Diploma in pastoral care (e.g. DPHM/DCPT). Bachelor’s degree in social work or other relevant. Report writing in English. Good knowledge of Microsoft Office  
Preferred: Work experience as a hospital-based counsellor. Experience in accounting.
