Travel: Frequent travel to programme and project areas around Nepal

Job purpose

Coordinate with WaterAid Nepal (WAN) internal and external teams and Partners to provide strategic contribution to strengthen WASH policy and advocacy work.
Design and implement Campaigns on World Water Day, Menstrual Hygiene Day, Global Handwashing Day, World Toilet Day and other relevant days as marked by WaterAid.
Initiate organizational learning on Gender Equity and Social Inclusion (GESI), WASH in Schools (WinS), Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management (MHHM), WASH Financing, Sanitation studies.

Team description

The Sector Effectiveness team advocates for WASH policy and practice change with lawmakers, government, development partners, national NGOs, and with WAN colleagues. We do this through advocacy, campaigns, research, innovations, and demonstration. Sector Effectiveness is one of the main flagship programmes in WAN. It works closely with the Programme team to ensure and advocate that policies and plans are mainstreamed into programmes in the ground. The Senior Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns Coordinator will work closely with the Senior WASH Policy Advisor and Head of Policy and Advocacy and report to the Head of Policy and Advocacy



  • Contribute to the implementation of Sector Effectiveness Flagship – Program Plan
  • Ensure systems are in place in project management to track progress against agreed results and achievements
  • Engage in discussions on advocacy activities through working with local governments, key stakeholders and different implementing partners.
  • Actively engage in designing of projects related to sector effectiveness, focusing on GESI, WinS, MHHM that contribute to strategic objectives of WAN
  • Coordinate with Communications & Fundraising on Campaigns undertaken by the Country Programme
  • Establish networks with external colleagues as appropriate for advocacy on WASH issues
  • Identify issues, develop concept notes and coordinate support for policy research, advocacy and influencing initiatives
  • Document reports, files, correspondences and other documents under Sector Effectiveness (SE) to support the unit
  • Prepare necessary reports to submit to the requirements of monthly reporting system and project centres on behalf of the SE unit
  • Represent WAN at relevant advocacy coordination and influencing forums for exchange of experiences and knowledge
  • Prepare analytical papers (write up), provide inputs and support in dissemination of policy briefs / findings
  • Monitor implementation of SE activities run by Partners and Consultants assigned by the unit
  • Safeguarding – Understand and puts into practice the responsibilities under Safeguarding and Child Protection policies and procedures and the Global Code of Conduct (CoC)

Essential skills

  • Bachelors’ (preferred Masters’ Degree) in Public Health, Social Science, Development Studies, or other relevant subjects, preferably with specialization in WASH.
  • Substantial years of work experience in programme development, monitoring and evaluation, preferably in WASH or similar responsibilities
  • Multi-year track record in advocacy especially in research, documentation and dissemination
  • Practical experience of social development in WASH sector, especially in the areas of social exclusion, menstrual hygiene management, and women’s rights issues
  • Experience of working with, supporting and building capacity of local organisations
  • Fluency in spoken and written Nepali and English language
  • IT literate with good word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation skills)
  • Good interpersonal skills

Desirable skills

  • Experience in report writing and research activities, preferably in WASH issues
  • Familiar with the technical knowledge on water supply, sanitation and hygiene services with water quality issues
